A gradual canticle. O Lord, remember David, and all his meekness.

qui iuravit Domino votum vovit Deo Iacob
sicut iuravit Domino votum vovit Deo Iacob
How he swore to the Lord, he vowed a vow to the God of Jacob:

si intravero in tabernaculum domus meae si adsedero super lectum straminis mei
si introiero in tabernaculum domus meae si ascendero in lectum strati mei
If I shall enter into the tabernacle of my house: if I shall go up into the bed wherein I lie:

si dedero somnum oculis meis et palpebris dormitationem
si dedero somnum oculis meis et palpebris meis dormitationem
If I shall give sleep to my eyes, or slumber to my eyelids,
|
| 5 |
donec inveniam locum Domino tabernacula Deo Iacob
et requiem temporibus meis donec inveniam locum Domino tabernaculum Deo Iacob
Or rest to my temples: until I find out a place for the Lord, a tabernacle for the God of Jacob.

ecce audivimus illum in Ephrata invenimus illum in regione saltus
ecce audivimus eam in Efrata invenimus eam in campis silvae
Behold we have heard of it in Ephrata: we have found it in the fields of the wood.

intremus in tabernacula eius adoremus scabillum pedum eius
introibimus in tabernacula eius adorabimus in loco ubi steterunt pedes eius
We will go into his tabernacle: we will adore in the place where his feet stood.

surge Domine in requiem tuam tu et arca fortitudinis tuae
surge Domine in requiem tuam tu et arca sanctificationis tuae
Arise, O Lord, into thy resting place: thou and the ark, which thou hast sanctified.

sacerdotes tui induantur iustitia et sancti tui laudent
sacerdotes tui induentur iustitia et sancti tui exultabunt
Let thy priests be clothed with justice: and let thy saints rejoice.
|

propter David servum tuum ne avertas faciem christi tui
propter David servum tuum non avertas faciem christi tui
For thy servant David's sake, turn not away the face of thy anointed.
|

iuravit Dominus David veritatem non avertetur ab ea de fructu ventris tui ponam super sedem tuam
iuravit Dominus David veritatem et non frustrabit eum de fructu ventris tui ponam super sedem tuam
The Lord hath sworn truth to David, and he will not make it void: of the fruit of thy womb I will set upon thy throne.

si custodierint filii tui pactum meum et testificationem meam quam docuero eos et filii eorum usque in aeternum sedebunt super thronum tuum
si custodierint filii tui testamentum meum et testimonia mea haec quae docebo eos et filii eorum usque in saeculum sedebunt super sedem tuam
If thy children will keep my covenant, and these my testimonies which I shall teach them: Their children also for evermore shall sit upon thy throne.

quia elegit Dominus Sion desideravit eam in habitaculum suum
quoniam elegit Dominus Sion elegit eam in habitationem sibi
For the Lord hath chosen Sion: he hath chosen it for his dwelling.

haec est requies mea in sempiternum hic habitabo quia desideravi eam
haec requies mea in saeculum saeculi hic habitabo quoniam elegi eam
This is my rest for ever and ever: here will I dwell, for I have chosen it.

venationem eius benedicens benedicam pauperes eius saturabo pane
viduam eius benedicens benedicam pauperes eius saturabo panibus
Blessing I will bless her widow: I will satisfy her poor with bread.

sacerdotes eius induam salutari et sancti eius laude laudabunt
sacerdotes eius induam salutari et sancti eius exultatione exultabunt
I will clothe her priests with salvation, and her saints shall rejoice with exceeding great joy.

ibi oriri faciam cornu David paravi lucernam christo meo
illic producam cornu David paravi lucernam christo meo
There will I bring forth a horn to David: I have prepared a lamp for my anointed.

inimicos eius induam confusione super ipsum autem florebit sanctificatio eius
inimicos eius induam confusione super ipsum autem efflorebit sanctificatio mea
His enemies I will clothe with confusion: but upon him shall my sanctification flourish.
